Career Profile: Corporal
Description
In addition to normal patrol duties, a police corporal has supervisory responsibility over other police officers and civilian personnel, if any, on his/her squad.
Testing Requirements
None. Promotions to Corporal are generally based on experience and seniority.
Experience
Generally, 2 to 5 years experience as a police officer with the agency the officer serves. In order to be promoted, officers must not have any disqualifying events on the personnel file. Officers with less adverse action on their personnel will likely be considered before officers with more adverse action.
Certifications & Education
- Certifications in law enforcement specialties are preferred.
- College credits or college degrees are preferred for positions of leadership and will increase your chances of getting hired compared to someone with the seniority, but no college experience.
