Career Profile: Social Worker
Job Description
Social workers strive to help improve people’s lives through assistance of those in need. They help with a wide range of issues, from troubled relationships to substance abuse to care for the elderly. On site work is common and many social workers spend a significant amount of time working in schools, hospitals, and foster homes.
Median Annual Salary
$37,480
Education Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) is the most common requirement, however for communities in extreme need, a bachelor’s degree in psychology or other related field may qualify an applicant. A Master’s degree in social work (MSW) is increasingly becoming a standard requirement for many social worker positions. Specialized jobs can also require a related Master’s degree. All states have some form of licensing, certification, or registration requirement to practice social work.
Job Outlook
Because of the high level of education required for most positions and the increased demand for social work, the job market for those with the proper education is favorable. There will be especially high demand in rural regions because so few trained social workers are in those areas.
