The 411 on Online Courses

Online

What are online courses?

Online courses often offer the same educational information that you would get in a traditional institution but they are held in virtual classrooms instead of physical classrooms. Classes tend to be similar to campus colleges. You will still have professors, books, assignments, exams, and grades, but also more flexibility as you would learn over the Internet from the location of your choice. If you have any questions about specific online programs, the admissions office at each school should be able to provide more information about their programs.

How do they work?

Each online course is going to vary slightly. In many courses, every class will have its own website where the professor will post reading assignments and study questions for the upcoming week. In turn it is the student’s responsibility to complete the reading and submit the questions at their own convenience, but by the given deadline. Each class or program is different, so make sure you read over the course guidelines and syllabus before starting your work.

What you will need

- A decent personal computer
- Internet access, preferably non-dial-up
- A quiet place to concentrate
- Any supplemental materials your program or class may require
